Switch over Ethernet


A WebRelay device can be used in conjunction with key switch hardware, or other equipment providing dry contacts, to execute a script and/or run a program.

Example 1: To facilitate school/campus lockdowns
The key switch located in the principles office is monitored by SWMon running on the DNS Redirector server.  When the principal uses his/her key to put the switch in the red position the server automatically plays a pre-recorded MP3 file (sound card output is connected to the PA system), and changes the DNS Redirector operation from Internet filter mode (normal school day usage) to captive portal mode, effectively blocking all Internet access.  The captive portal would redirect all web requests to a page with special instructions.  Configuration could allow for staff to enter a bypass password, thereby clearing the special instructions (just on the computer they are using) and getting out to the Internet.  When the principal returns the key to the green position DNS Redirector operation returns to Internet filter mode for all computers.

Example 2: Fire/Incident response
The fire alarm or other equipment control panel is connected to a WebRelay which is monitored by SWMon running on the DNS Redirector server.  During the alarm state DNS Redirector would be configured to block all Internet access, or redirect all web requests to a page with special instructions.  Configuration could allow for staff to enter a bypass password, thereby clearing the special instructions (just on the computer they are using) and getting out to the Internet.  When the alarm state is cleared DNS Redirector operation returns to normal, or acts as pass-through DNS server with no special functions enabled.

 - Key switch in office, WebRelay hardware in wiring closet (UPS protected?)
 - Multiple key switches, any of which monitored by a central server
 - Key switch monitored by server and/or triggering device located elsewhere

 - A control password must be defined on the WebRelay device, and the same password set within swmon.ini
